Once upon a time a few years ago Michael had a phobia of needles. He once needed a blood test, and he REALLY didn’t want it. But it was important.
Seven people, nurses, doctors, orderlies and his mum all held him still while the blood was taken. Michael hated it. He really hated it.
Michael is now a 24-year-old young man with Down Syndrome, autism and an intellectual disability.
Come 2021 and Michael needed to get his COVID vaccination. With the memory of the previous event Michael was adamant he was not getting another needle. EVER..!
Sue, his mum came up with a cunning plan. After completing VSM@Home training, she decided to see what magic she could weave with a Video Self Model.
Sue wore Michael’s favourite red T-shirt and was videoed having her jab. She became a stunt double.
She made a VSM with the footage that looked like Michael was having his vaccination. Even Michael was convinced.

After watching for 2 weeks, Michael performed a minor miracle. He sat still and allowed the nurse to put the needle in. No problem.
